Check out the trailer.

Quick Thoughts

As I was writing this small post, I realized that it is very similar to Untouchable in many ways. Hell, this webtoon could also be called Untouchable but dog version.

I really enjoyed how the plot developed, filled of drama, romance, and comedy. This concept was really interesting to follow as it had plenty of different scenarios to experience: the lack of time, the difficulty in reaching Seon Jin’s lips as a dog and other obstacles to their romance that I won’t spoil (hint: characters’ ancestors). I was happy with the ending and how it fulfilled most of my wishes and curiosities.

Lee Hee’s art style is engaging, neat and colorful. The puppies are so adorable and fluffy.

I would recommend if you like the genres romance, comedy, drama, and fantasy, forbidden and difficult romance. If you liked reading Untouchable you will probably enjoy this adorable piece of art like I did. If not, it showers you with cute puppies that you cannot avoid!

I am always on board if the webtoon has animals in it. If you have any webtoon in mind with animal themed stories comment I would love to know them.

I hope you enjoyed reading and that you read this amazing webtoon! Share on the comments what you think, I would love to hear your thoughts as well.

Good read!

Quick Thoughts: Untouchable

Featured

Hello readers!

I am back from school! I am currently watching “Oh my baby” and to pass time faster I decided to reread the webtoon Untouchable” and in this post I’ll share a few thoughts about my experience.

Source: Untouchable Webtoon Google Images
  • Webtoon: Untouchable
  • Author: Massstar
  • Chapters: 142 (Completed)
  • Genres: Romance

Synopsis

Untouchable shares a new reality where vampires exist, and they evolved a lot from the traditional vampire we know so well to better survive. Instead of sucking people’s blood, they touch the human’s bare skin to “suck” the human’s energy.

The story follows beautiful Sia Lee, a prideful vampire, that runs away from home (particularly from her dad), because she doesn’t want to “eat to live” but “live to eat”, that is, she doesn’t want to survive with the blandest energy but hunt the most delicious ones. Sia Lee moves out to find the tastiest energy she had tasted in her life, but she also discovers that it’s not going to be as easy as she thought.

The owner is called Jiho and he is germophobic. He does not like to be touched by other people. Sia Lee instead of giving up she forcefully enters in his life and attempts to “eliminate” his problem to touch him more.

Quick Thoughts

This is the second time I read this webtoon and, although I knew how it was going to end, I had forgotten those small details that make a story so much richer. Back in the time, I loved reading this webtoon so did I do now, but it is my first time reviewing it.

So, the first thing I wanted to say about “Untouchable” is how beautiful the art style is. I loved the plot and the art made it even more meaningful and distinct. I loved how the colours were used, it made the characters and environments glow and create a more impactful story.

And second and last was its engaging plot and interesting concept. I liked how the plot was placed and developed along with the characters. The vampire’s new concept was different which created a unique romance between this very common couple.

I have a few things that I still questioned like Sia Lee’s family’s attitude towards the “situation”, but I guess it was meant to dramatize the plot even further. It can get a bit cheesy and repetitive because of the flashbacks. I liked how the vampire’s concept evolved but it does not make sense to me how the vampires do not control the energy they take and how the energy’s taste is general between vampires. How humans choose to eat and have different palates, vampires should be able to choose how much they want to take, without having to stop physical contact, and differentiate their tastes from other vampires’ tastes. I guess it still has a lot to evolve.

I would recommend this webtoon if you enjoy vampire themed stories with a forbidden romance between vampires and humans, a love triangle, drama, comedy, strict family, and two-faced best friend. Prepare to have your heart snatched by gorgeous Sia Lee who will not stop until she “eats” that delicious chicken (that is how she calls Jiho).

Thank you for reading and I hope you read this amazing webtoon. Do not be like me that spent reading it until 2 am. It is really addictive but don’t sacrifice your beauty sleep. 😅

Tell me what you think about this webtoon when you finish it, I would love to read your thoughts as well. Have fun reading! 😄

Synopsis

Aileen is a mermaid in the Modern Era and she loves humans’ pop culture, dramas, bands and movies, but the main reason she loves the surface is because of her love, Chef Kwon Shi-Kyung, who she describes as hot, handsome and incredibly sexy.

During one of the filmings, Shi-Kyung spots her watching him and falls from the platform, giving Aileen an opportunity to kiss him.

She keeps his lost phone and follows his tweets that would lead her to a party of his company where he would be waiting for her and his previous phone. In order to join her “true love”, Aileen found a way to become a human and go to his party. Sadly, Shi-Kyung didn’t recognize her, breaking her heart.

Later, Aileen finds out she has 100 days to find her True Love or she would vanish in bubbles. She is forced to adapt to the human life and begins to live in a share house, meeting new people and better understanding what is true love and how to achieve it, with her new name Kim Ha-Ni.

Plot

The plot of “Surplus Mermaid“, also known as “The Idle Mermaid” or “Surplus Princess”, is engaging and enjoyable. It follows the development of various romances between different side characters, as well as a love square between the protagonists, that grows balanced between rivals which becomes unsettling. The biggest focus wasn’t on the drama but on the humour. There are a lot of references for Korean and Japanese pop culture and some moments were well crafted for comedy and it made the series quicker and funnier.

I really enjoyed the plot, even if the synopsis appears a bit cliché it twists as it develops. I am disappointed how the beginning and last scene didn’t match and the ending wasn’t explained nor will it receive a second season to be developed.

Even so, the plot is likeable and addictive, I appreciated it’s elements and development.

Cast

  • Kim Ha-Ni✰ Jo Bo-Ah
  • Kwon Shi-Kyung ✰ Song Jae-Rim
  • Lee Hyun-Myung ✰ On Joo-Wan
  • Yoon Jin-A ✰ Park Ji-Soo
  • An Hye-Young ✰ Kim Seul-Gi
  • Do Ji-Yong ✰ Kim Min-Kyo
  • Big ✰ Nam Joo-Hyuk
  • Lee Sun-Kyu ✰ Lee Sun-Kyu

Characters

Aileen/ Kim Ha-Ni

Early in her career, with 23 years old, Jo Bo-Ah premiered in “Surplus Mermaid” as Aileen, later Kim Ha-Ni. Nowadays, she has acquired more jobs and experience. You might know her as the female protagonist of “Strange Hero”, Son Soo-Jeong, or from others works “Goodbye to Goodbye”, “Monster” and “ All about my Mom”, whose the actress received awards of excellence.

Kim Ha-Ni is the main character of “Surplus Mermaid”.
Aileen was the 18th princess (I didn’t understand their system) and she loved the human world, their smartphones, their dramas and music. She had her own smartphone hanging from her neck. It was fascinating to her how humans were so capable and talented.
She was sly, open-minded and perverted- she knew too much. She was dependent and afraid at times and in others she was spontaneous and imprudent.
Aileen or Kim Ha-Ni is very relatable and the title of the Kdrama really suits her character, the “Surplus Mermaid”.
I like her character a lot and the actress that played Kim Ha-Ni, she was amazing.

Kwon Shi-Kyung

Sang Sae-Rim in a 4 pictures edit, focusing on his body, face and booty duting Surplus Mermaid.
Edit 3- Aileen’s presention of the ideal, the perfect and irreplaceable Chef Kwon Shi-Kyung

Handsome and eye-catching actor Sang Sae-Rim played Kwon Shi-Kyung’s character. He is a model and actor and has been active since 2009.

Kwon Shi-Kyung is one of the male protagonists of “Surplus Mermaid”.
An outstanding and professional Chef, Kwon Shi-Kyung, is a perfectionist arrogant to his employers. Outside work, he is more accessible with a very calm, approachable aura and a beautiful smile to “die for”.

He has a bad reputation though. Rumours say he is ungrateful and a disrespectful womanizer because of his lack of interest in people that helped him get where he was.
When he meets Kim Ha-Ni in the surface he doesn’t recognize her as the girl that kissed him underwater but, instead, one of her employers, Yoon Jin-A, who also admired and liked romantically Shi-Kyung.

⚠⚠Spoilers⚠⚠

Excusing his arrogance and ingratitude with lack of memory, in truth he suffered from Agnosia, the inability to process sensory information which means loss of ability to recognize objects, persons, sounds, shapes or smells.

Shi-Kyung wouldn’t share this problem because he didn’t want people to feel pity him.

Lee Hyun-Myung

On Joo-Wan, eyes closed, writing on his keyboard, playing Lee Hyun-Myung.
Aileen’s presention of Lee Hyun-Myung

I never have seen Lee Hyun-Myung’s actor, On Joo-Wan. Cute and charming, On Joo-Wan had a delighted expression when he smiled with white teeth the rest of his face would smile too. It was adorable. Currently, he has 35 years old and gained a few acting experienced in drama series as “Beautiful Gong Shim” and movies as “Remember you”, part of the side characters.

Lee Hyun-Myung is the second male protagonist.

Unlike successful Kwon Shi-Kyung, Lee Hyun-Myung has been job hunting for big companies, since 3 years ago. Although never passing to the next stage, he gained experience in writing resumes. It was impressing how he had written so many through the years, he had become a pianist in the keyboard.

I really liked his character, how he was positive and hard-working, loving and determined in his relationship with Yoon Jin-A. He and his friends and roommates demonstrated how hard it can be to be employed by big companies in Korea and how it’s difficult to follow your studied course in the market, which was Lee Hyun-Mung and Do Ji-Yong’s problem.

But the positivity would only reach that far. He had attempted suicide twice in the Han River, Seoul. In the course of the plot, Lee Hyun-Myung changes thanks to Yoon Jin-A and Kim Ha-Ni.

Yoon Jin-A

Park Ji-soo in his first appearence in Surplus Mermaid- She smiles upfront to the camera.
Yoon Jin-Ah’s first appearence in Surplus Mermaid

Park Ji-Soo in “Surplus Mermaid” was responsible for the rival’s role, Yoon Jin-A. She is mostly known for her official acting debut in 2013, “Mai Ratima”.

Yoon Jin-A is part of the love square.

In the first episode, she is introduced as “the witch” by Kim Ha-Ni, because of her proximity with Shi-Kyung.

Yoon Jin-A works in the company JH food, as Shi-Kyung’s assistant, and as they were filming and Shi-Kyung fell from the platform, she jumped to his rescue, cutting off Aileen’s kiss. She is also Lee Hyun-Myung’s girlfriend, who she had been supporting since his quest for a job.

In my opinion, Park Ji-soo’s character as a rival was petty and annoying but as a person, she had some standards and respect for herself.

⚠⚠Spoilers⚠⚠

I mean she was despicable in some moments to Lee Hyun-Myung and Kim Ha-Ni. I remember a few moments that really pissed me off or shocked me but I think she was a fair rival until those extremes.

In the end, I was disappointed by her development.

An Hye-Young

The same age as Jo Bo-Ah, the lead actress, Kim Seul-Gi plays Kim Ha-Ni’s first real friend, An Hye-Young. She was part of the side characters’ cast in popular drama series as “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo”, “The Legend of the Blue Sea”, “Oh My Ghost”, “Kill Me, Heal Me” and “Discovery of Love”, whose work awarded her “Best New Actress” (2014) by KBS Drama Awards.

An Hye-Young isn’t a protagonist nor part of the love square but she is very important to the story.

Unlike the other characters, she didn’t have a clear introduction- it was presented late- and when she was, I saw her as the most diverse and unexpecting character in this drama. She is headstrong and honest with a raw way to say things.

I adore her dead eyes and bold attitude, it adds to the romance and comedy.

Before Kim Ha-Ni, her presence was almost nil and, although being in the share house she didn’t care nor socialized with her roommates. Thanks to Kim Ha-Ni and her intrusions, she started hanging out with them and opening up to them (edit 2).

Performance

“Surplus Mermaid” has a creative and engaging storytelling thanks to the cast’s amazing performance.

I enjoyed how every character was different and special their own way. They knew how to deliver their roles and what the moment required them to do, either in conflicted, humorous or dramatic moments.

Most actors I never heard about but now I am convinced by their performances. My favourites were Jo Bo-Ah (Kim Ha-Ni), On Joo-Wan (Lee Hyun-Myung), Kim Seol-Gi (Ah Hye-Young) and Nam Joo-Hyuk (Big) and I’ll definitely watch more works from them when I have more time.

The only thing I didn’t enjoy was how mermaids were presented with a cheap costume, you can tell the tail is fake and the bikini is a transparent tight shirt. It ruins the drama’s credibility for comedy even if it’s not directly associated with the actors and actresses’ performances.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack caught me off-guard because of the many references of pop culture.

Since one of the Kdrama’s main focus is the comedy, the soundtrack was selected especially for those special moments. One of my favourites was how the “Attack on Titan” first opening would kick in every time Manager Kim, Jin-A’s boss, caught her employers gossiping.

Moreover, the moments are taken seriously at times and the songs reveal that as well. Several, sad and melodramatic, while others were romantic and enthusiastic.

Even though I don’t have favourites, I enjoyed the soundtrack.

Scenario

The scenarios were focused in Seoul, Korea, and in the sea where it’s introduced our daring mermaid.

In Seoul, South Korea, it’s supposedly located the share house, Shi-Kyung’s apartment and workplace. Besides that, there are a few spots you can visit or stroll where the filmings occurred, for example, the Han River and the Hongik University.

I am neutral about the scenarios, I am not fascinated, yet I don’t dislike them.

Final Thoughts

Overall, “Surplus Mermaid” was a short Kdrama I will always cherish in my heart and mind. The plot is addictive and humorous, the cast is well selected with interesting characters, the soundtrack and the scenarios are good and satisfactory as well.

The only aspects I disliked about it were the unexplained ending and the excess of comedy. The romance wasn’t particularly focused, creating a balanced probability of the heroine’s true love- it was good and bad-, and how the mermaids’ concept was taken lightly for comedy.

I wasn’t expecting I would have so much fun watching this Drama. Even if it had a disappointing ending, it was a unique experience and I’d definitely rewatch it. I’d recommend this Kdrama to fans of love squares, unsettling shipping, comedy, side romances, mermaids’ drama, an imprudent female protagonist, handsome male protagonists and Japanese and Korean pop culture. If you have a busy schedule and you’d like to watch a Kdrama, “Surplus Mermaid” is good to spend time.

Subject: “The World is Still Beautiful”

Dear Otakus,

In this post, I am talking about a shoujo /comedy/ romance anime called “The World is Still Beautiful”. I heard little of it and, after reading the synopsis I was intrigued.
The anime’s plot creates a new world, divided by Kingdoms: The Rain Kingdom, the Sun Kingdom, The Ocean Kingdom, etc; for their unique qualities.
In the Sun Kingdom, the rain is rare, if not, nonexistent, and it was able to survive drought and hunger thanks to their king, Livius I, that brought peace and wealth to its citizens.
In the Rain Kingdom was the opposite and to protect their Kingdom, they, forcibly, send Nike, the fourth princess of the Rain Kingdom, who possesses the power to call forth the rain, to marry the King of the Sun Kingdom.
She is surprised to see that the Great King is a child and is shocked by how he treats her as a toy, demanding her to call forth the rain. She refuses because she needs to learn about the world he lives in, his feelings and experiences.
As she shows him the beauty left in the world, both begin to understand each other better and gradually falling in love with each other.

About the Anime

“The World is Still Beautiful”, or “Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii”, is an anime, based on the manga created by Dai Shiina in 2012, still on-going, with 19 volumes, has 12 episodes (22 minutes each), aired in 2014, directed by Hajime Kamegaki, a work from the Studio Pierrot, that produced many popular animes, “Doraemon”, “Naruto”, “Naruto Shippuden”, “Akatsuki no Yona”, “Tokyo Ghoul”, “Bleach”, for example.

In the beginning, I was a bit hesitant to continue watching but after getting used to it (after 3 episodes), I can say it was different than what I expected.

What I didn’t like about “The World is Still Beautiful”?

Being qualified as Shoujo shocked me, even if the anime’s plot appeals to the young female audiences. Why do I say this?

  • Fan Service. You know, how they use a woman’s cleavage to bring more audience. Nike was seen as a beautiful princess with big breasts and even one girl grope them like it was theirs. Fortunately, there aren’t no “I am naked get out” moments or flashes.

And…

  • The difference between the protagonists’ ages. Maybe seen as pedophilic for us since she is a teenager and he is a kid, the world they live in are used to arranged marriages in young ages and with an age gap as loyalty. It made the romance look weird.

It can be accepted as Shoujo but sure is awkward since it’s targeted for young girls.

One of the steps, shoujo’s romances don’t miss are Rivals and honestly, I am tired of drama caused by Rivals. “They” are getting boring and over-used with time.

Besides this, I was unsatisfied with the male lead because of his cliché and vague personality. Livius I is an absolute brat, a sadist playing with people as toys, harsh and merciless to his enemies, who works to forget his past, unable to see the beauty the world, only as “stupid” things. Through the plot, he develops thanks to Nike, but in the beginning, he was annoying and expectable.

The comedy is a good thing if used properly. I think it was childish at times- I guess it’s only normal since it’s for little girls- but other times it just made the moment less serious.

At last, the ending lacked since the anime was only 12 episodes long, but it stings either way, especially when it was about to get interesting.

I enjoyed my experience thought for many reasons:

  • Nike is a curious female protagonist. Her personality is also a copy of other Shoujo Characters, for their strong determination, energetic and friendly aura, perceptive and with a straightforward attitude. Even so, her power makes her special. With an enchanting voice, she calls forth the rain, befriending the citizens and the King.
  • Music is one of my favorite qualities of this anime. Her song, “Tender Rain”, can be repetitive but it always makes me happy when it appears. I also questioned the fact that the Royalty of the Rain Kingdom was able to control the weather. Wouldn’t there be consequences of their usage, excluding fatigue?
  • The characters’ development is interesting and the plot is different, it’s about the beauty in the world and how the rain is important. Its connection with Nature was important and I liked how the animation made everything so beautiful, gentle, innocent around them. And finally, the comedy is a good thing, showing off their facades when the leads were mad or seduced by each other.

Overall, I’d recommend this anime to young admirers of fantasy, romance, and comedy. It has an appealing animation with an interesting plot even if it only lasts for 12 episodes.

I hope you enjoyed the quick review,

Have a good day,

Faith

Inspired by the AsianWiki Staff’s Synopsis

During the Joseon Period, ending of the 1500s, there was a storm that brought to shore a mermaid. Discovered by Humans, she was captured by Mr Yang’s men, owner of a local Inn. Meanwhile, the newly appointed governor Dam Ryung stayed the night in the same Inn, and, in celebration of the new leader, Mr Yang showed the imprisoned mermaid to Dam Ryung, who blackmailed him to release her into the ocean. Vengeful, Mr Yang undid his doing, promising to revenge against the governor and get back the mermaid.

From that moment, the mermaid and Dam Ryung were bound by fate, falling for each other.

In the present time, Joon-Jae is a smooth-talking conman, specialized in magic and hypnosis. Working by Nam-Doo and Tae-Oh’s side, they make an unstoppable, consistent and loyal trio. For their next score, Joon-Jae impersonates a prosecutor and swindles a large amount of money from a wealthy suspect’s mother. After, the trio separates and go to their own private vacations overseas. Joon-Jae travels to Spain and stays at an oceanside resort, where he is surprised by a strange girl, hidden in his wardrobe.

•Plot•

⚠Beware Spoilers⚠

“The Legend of the Blue Sea”’s Plot is engaging, interesting, unexpectable and dramatic, filled with the most overwhelming moments and rich protagonists’ backstory and “powers”.

The storytelling is captivating connecting the past with the present.

The past tells the Legend of the Blue Sea, a romance between a Human and Mermaid. In the present, their story repeats as their reincarnations, the mermaid and the governor, in the present Shim Cheong and Heo Joon Jae, meet each other and other characters, other reincarnations from the Joseon Period.

The best part is that none of this is a coincidence, in truth, the present repeats the past because the characters are bound by fate, so strongly, their appearances are the same from the past and have a feeling of familiarity between characters like they “met in a parallel universe” or “I recognize this moment”. Through dreams, their fates were linked as it would tell a small bit of the story from the past. Discovering each past character’s ending through dreams or hypnosis, the present characters were determined to change it.

“The past repeats itself”

I really enjoy how the characters are diverse and useful, I loved the mermaids’ concept and powers, it turned the plot dynamic and unpredictable, and the background of each character, what’s their story, jobs and behaviour.

The romance is beautiful. Forbidden relationships are always so dramatic and suspenseful, especially between Mermaids and Humans, although is not the only thing I find amusing. Shim Cheong and Heo Joon-Jae are a very cute couple, perfect for each other. Bond by fate, something greater than lifespan and beyond religion and facts, an impossible coincidence reunited these individuals. Shim Cheong, the mermaid, didn’t know anything of the rules of the human society and the consequences of a mermaid out of her natural habitat. So clueless of her actions, a storm and curiosity brought her to Heo Joon-Jae’s room. At first, their relationship was sparkled by annoyance and pure materialism interest from Joon-Jae but then as they became friends and fell in love, Joon-Jae grew protective and preoccupied with Shim Cheong. Being naive, Cheong was always straightforward and honest with people around her, especially Joon-Jae, while Joon-Jae took care of her without knowing really why his fixation with her besides the desire to know what happened in Spain, when he first met her.

The romance became adorable and platonic almost when both started dating and Joon-Jae started listening to her thoughts. Protecting her from water or any other form of danger, they were almost inseparable. Their interacts are so cute and romantic. They are made for each other. Fate made it beautiful.

I also enjoyed the competence between rivals, Cha Si ah and Shim Cheong had a cat and dog relationship, direct and “threatening”. While male rivalry wasn’t strong since it was faked, it did some effect on Joon-Jae. Shim Cheong always loved Joon-Jae, she never questioned it.

Besides the romance and the connection between the past and the present, the plot is rich by the crimes and police, that as well as being linked to the past of those characters, is organized and interesting how it develops, according to their story.

Despite these thoughts, I was very confused at the beginning of the drama, even though it was clarified later, and it was very questionable some of Shim Cheong’s powers and actions. Her super strength, her ability to erase memories and she could’ve done and what she did instead was just a motive to cause more unwanted drama. And, finally, the drama. It can be so much, so much, you just want people to discover it already to be done with it. I mean It’s good there is suspense and that the emotions are growing but I wanted so much to not be late- a reference to episode 17. While they were happy, having fun, on the other hand, people were suffering, and even if the protagonists didn’t know, I was hoping so much that it wasn’t too late to save them.

It was a long journey, this kdrama’s plot (20 episodes = 20 hours). Filled with drama, romance, “mystery”, fantasy and placed between the present and past, it created a beautiful, mythical and engaging story. Even if there were too much drama and questionable choices, I was happy with “The Legend of the Blue Sea”’s Plot.

⚠Spoilers⚠

~~Shim Cheong~~

Was interpreted by Gianna Jun. Unlike other actresses, she was a deeper voice, more subtle than the usual female voice. I was surprised at first and then seduced by it. Like an enchanting melody, she performed the protagonist’s role of Shim Cheong, the beautiful mermaid that fell in love with the Man who saved her life.

The most recent, starting her role as Shim Cheong in  “Legend of the Blue Sea”, she was rewarded for her efforts as “Teen Star” and part of the “Best Couple”, recognized by SBS Drama Awards in 2016. In 2015, she received the “Best Actress Award” from her work in the movie “Assassination” and in 2014, SBS Drama Awards, her work in “My Love from the Star” gained three awards, “Grand Prize”, “Best Actor or Actress selected by Directors” and “Best Couple”.

Shim Cheong is an enchanting, selfless and beautiful mermaid, who reincarnates from Se-Hwa, the mermaid from the Joseon Period.

With no knowledge of humans, the surface and the rules of society, she was pushed to this scarred world. Her first human encounter was Hae Joon-Jae, the owner of the room she broke in. She didn’t know how to talk his language and, threatened by his behaviour, she used her super strength against him and he tied her up, calling the cops. She is curious, amazed by that new world, and, happily, she followed Joon-Jae around when he grabbed her back from the police.

He taught her some etiquette rules, bought her new clothes, gave her food and a home. She became happy by his side so easily, falling in love for Hae Joon-Jae. Meanwhile, he was mostly interested in her source and the bracelet but, after trying to abandoning her, he grew worried and protective of her.

As a mermaid, she has a lot of powers. She is super intelligent, she quickly learned the language and the rules through dramas and conversations. By touching a human, she can erase the person’s memories of her, by kissing she can choose to delete all of her memories of her from that person, she has controlled super strength- I don’t understand how-, as a very efficient immune system and, when hurt, her body heals super fast and her tears turn into valuable pearls. When she controlled those powers, she was able to focus and see someone’s memories through direct touch.
Also, If the person she loves, loves her back, he can read her thoughts- I don’t understand why- making a tone of comedic and emotional moments.
Between mermaids, they can recognize themselves through thoughts and touch and are very sensitive to the surface: if the person the mermaid loves doesn’t love her back, his/ her heart will die slowly unless it returns to the ocean or the person loves the mermaid back.

I really like the mermaid’s concept and powers. It makes Shim Cheong independent from rescue, although there are some situations she is the damsel in distress. She is very helpful throughout the drama.

Besides that, she learned quite a lot from every character, excluding Joon-Jae, and developed many exclusive friendships, a little girl she tried to mug- funny story-, a beggar, who helped Shim Cheong live on the streets, and Hae Joon-Jae’s lost mother.

I liked how she was clueless and, after a night, she learned how to speak Korean through dramas. I wished I could do the same. That includes how she learns about love, money and how to live “normally”, like a human.

~~Heo Joon-Jae~~

The first reason I was interested in “The Legend of the Blue Sea” was the mermaids’ theme. I love mermaids and if you have recommendations of anything with “good” mermaids, comment please. And the second reason I was interested was Lee Min-Ho, Heo Joon-Jae’s actor. I loved his performance in “Boys Over Flowers” and, when I discovered he was on this drama, I needed to watch it, sooner or later.

Lee Min-Ho, Heo Joon-Jae’s actor, is very popular from several dramas and movies, that received many awards such as “City Hunter”, “The Heirs”, “Gangnam Blues” and “Legend of Blue Sea”. He also sings. He is wonderful.

As Heo Joon-Jae, he is a conman with his partners in crime, Jo Nam Doo and Tae-Oh. He is very capable. Expert in hypnosis and magic, first he locks the victim’s attention’s, distracted in his magic, and then steals away his/her goods, and with hypnosis, he can persuade through a different reality created by him while playing with his metal lighter.

He is cold and insensitive to Shim Cheong until he discovers she has 6 million won worth bracelet. Interested in its value, he steals it and tries to abandon her. He returns, justifying he has manners and that he never leaves without saying goodbye.

Heo Joon-Jae starts to worry for Shim Cheong, protecting her against his pursuers. He doesn’t actually know he is the one protected by her.

After his vacations in Spain, he regresses to Seoul, his home city, and he doesn’t remember anything about Shim Cheong. He only has her Jadeite bracelet, she gave before leaving him. He feels something is lacking from him and, when she arrived in Seoul to meet him, he is intrigued and bothered by her presence, how she doesn’t say what happened between them in Spain and who was she.

Eventually, they became closer due to Shim Cheong’s stubbornness. He was the one who gave her present name, and the first one in the drama to remember about Dam Ryung’s history, as his reincarnation.

Besides that, his character suffers quite a development when he met and fell in love with Shim Cheong. To a cold and distant character, he became kind and understanding around her, giving up on schemes.

His backstory was traumatic. With a young age, he was abandoned by his mother and started living with his father, stepmother and stepbrother, who didn’t acknowledge his struggles and pain from losing his mother. He runs from home and hires a “detective” to find his mother, who scams him. From that moment, after encountering Jo Nam Doo, the supposed detective, he entered in his current line of work, finding Tae Oh later, and became a conman against rich people with “dirty” money.

~~Jo Nam Doo~~

Responsible for Jo Nam-Doo’s role was Lee Hee-Joon. With a lot of experience from TV movies, Drama Series and Movies, he was recognized by his work in “Drama Special Series: Perfect Spy” as “Short Drama Actor (2011), and “Best New Actor” and “Best Couple Award” in “My Husband Got a Family” in 2012 and 2013.

Jo Nam Doo, part of the trio, is fundamental to know all of the data behind any gigs, searching about people and learning their schedules to create a plan. He is a very loyal character, proud of his skills and partners, with a lot of self-rules to prioritize his interests: manners, respect, money and friendship. He can be very straightforward, a bit arrogant and convinced. In the end, it’s created a misunderstanding that betrayed my trust but it was easily restored.

~~Tae-Oh~~

The baby-faced hacker Tae-Oh is performed by Shin Won-Ho. Besides “The Legend of the Blue Sea”, he worked in other Drama Series, for example, “Risky Romance”, “20th Century Boy and Girl” and “Big”.

Tae-Oh is part of the unstoppable trio, as the hacker, and thanks to him, they are able to access the most secure spots and make the digital proof disappear as he deletes surveillance camera’s footage after the score. With no proof of their involvement, they run free without suffering any consequences.

He is often playing games on his phone or computer, or listening to music and, besides eyeing characters surprised or flushed, he is very quiet, only talking in difficult situations.
During of one of their gigs, Cha Si-Ah, Heo Joon-Jae’s friend and Shim Cheong’s rival, almost caught the trio fooling her family, thanks to Tae-Oh, who dropped in, stressed, lied to Cha Si-Ah, confessing to her. Surprised/ shocked, Cha Si-Ah started hanging out with him, calling him to clubs and karaoke when she was feeling sad, thinking he would relate to her pain, although he actually liked Shim Cheong.

There were a lot of funny moments surrounding him and Cha Si-Ah, mostly misunderstandings, that evolved in something romantic. They are super cute.

~~Cha Si-A~~

Awarded for her participation in “My Golden Life” (2017), “Excellent Actress (Long-Length Drama” and “Best Couple”, and in “Still 17”( 2018), “Best Actress (Monday-Tuesday Drama)”, Shin Hye Sun was responsible for Cha Si-Ah role, Shim Cheong’s Rival and archaeologist in a cultural museum.

At first, Cha Si-A l is defensive towards Shim Cheong and tries to make her jealous as she interacts with her friend and crush Heo Joon-Jae.
Cha Si- Ah is important to the story to develop Hae Joon-Jae’s intel on his former “predecessor”, Dam Ryung. She was the one responsible to show Dam Ryung’s portrait, confirming his suspicions about his dreams. She was a very comedic character since she was confessed by Tae-Oh.
As well as other characters, Cha Si-Ah develops a lot through the drama.

•Performance•

I have no complaints. I loved the cast selected for each role and their performances.

I was very emotional through the drama, they were amazing, playing their roles correctly. Shim Cheong a mysterious yet charming character who knows nothing and, one day, she turns to a genius. She is kind but, not knowing anything how the Humans’ world works, she repeats what she sees. Gianna Jun interprets her so well. I was very surprised by her performance and I would love to see her again. “My Love from the Star” sounds a good start.

From Lee Min-ho, it’s my second time watching him acting. Goo Jun-Pyo to Hae Joon-Jae I kept comparing both, which was a bad thing, but both of them do share some resemblances. Anyways, I was amazed by his performance as well, his expressions are different and captivating, it really glues my eyes to the screen. To be honest, his appearance is also very pleasing and “distracting”.

I loved the wardrobe of the Joseon Period, it was really intriguing and eye-catching. Their performances during the past’s memories and dreams were amazing, it gave of a mythical, romantic and historical feeling to it, a princess in distress and the prince, the hero, vibes. I was always impressed by those moments.

The supporting cast was also very good and professional, focussed on playing their roles. Their efforts were definitely repaid with an amazing drama.

Overall, I am really happy about the cast’s performance.

•Scenario•

“The Legend of the Blue Sea”’s scenarios are very beautiful and diverse.

The scenes placed between the Joseon Period, the past, and the present time of the drama, in the Modern’s Era, and, of course, there are a lot of scenes in the sea, water associated.

During the Joseon Period, most of the scenes were wore in traditional Korean clothes on beautiful scenarios as the Pocheon Art Valley and the Boseong Green Tea Plantation.

Outside Seoul, Spain was like a mirage, so beautiful and “romantic”, it felt like it never happened when the protagonists return to Seoul. In Spain, the views were amazing. The opening shows some of those scenes and they felt almost mythical.

Heo Joon-Jae at first stayed at the oceanside resort in Girona. After meeting Shim Cheong and running away with her, they stayed in a luxurious castle, the Castell de Santa Florentinaand he passed by many other spots in Barcelona.

The Tower of Hercules is one of the spots in Spain, Corunna, the Drama took place, as described by Heo Joon-Jae, “where the world ends”.

The shopping center filmed supposedly in Spain is actually in South Korea, Starfield Hanam, where he, Joon-Jae, bought Shim Cheong’s first clothes.

In Seoul, those vacations are nothing but lost memories Heo Joon-Jae is trying to gather back and meeting Shim Cheong in his birthday on the Aquarium (Aqua Planet, Yeosu, 63 Building), made him keep her close by, to discover what happened between them.

From his luxurious house, where she starts living with him and his partners, Jo Nam Doo and Tae Oh, to the streets of Seoul, the city, Namsam Tower (N Seoul Tower), we can see from his house’s patio, the Daemyung Vivaldi Park Ski World, the Yeouido Hangang Park, where they saw the fireworks, and Myeongdong.

Besides Seoul, “The Legend of the Blue Sea” was filmed in other parts of South Korea as Incheon, Paju, Donghae, Sam Cheok, Gangneung and Jeju.

With a diverse set of sceneries, it’s impossible to not wander through the drama, where they were, where those scenes took place and how they changed for the drama. After searching more about the scenarios, I was fascinated by the resemblance, I really wondered what it felt to be in those places where Lee Min-ho and Gianna Jun played their roles as Se Hwa and Dam Ryung or Shim Cheong and Heo Joon-Jae.

I really enjoyed the drama and the scenarios made it more culturally and visually distinguished. I loved its relationship with the ocean and how magic it demonstrated the past.

•Soundtrack•

The soundtrack is sad and romantic. Some more cringy than other- reference to “My Love Story”- but all of them in the perfect moment.

“This is a Love Story (…)
“This is amazing”

"Love story" by Lyn

Listening to the soundtrack with the drama finished brings some tears. If only they turned into pearls.

“I owe you I miss you
I need you I love you”

"You are my World" by Tasha Reid

I recall the most romantic moments around Shim Cheong and Joon-Jae with these tunes, innocent and sweet, dedicated to their love for each other.

Others grab the excitement in action sequels or just pure sadness… It was so well placed in each moment, with so many feelings linked, I can’t properly think.

Besides the soundtrack of the plot in the present time, I was amazed by the songs played during the Joseon scenes, the tragic scenes, “WindFlower” and “One in Ten Thousand”, and the scenes they are together.

Sound of the Ocean” makes the opening and brings anyone to the fantastic world of mermaids and the sea, with flying whales and her tail in the background, giving off heavenly vibes to the opening sequence and any moment occurring. “The Last Time” is one of those songs that boost your heart as tension increases. “Hidden Story”, “My Name”, as the mermaid appears and stays for him, for love, and “At this time”, priceless in funny moments.
The soundtrack of “The Legend of the Blue Sea” is very beautiful, romantic and matching better some moments than others, they leave a lot of darling memories to me.

•Final Thoughts•

To some people, the show was considered overrated. In my opinion, I was expecting less from what I read but the drama surprised and left me engaged until the end. I love mermaids and I liked Lee Min-Ho’s performance, both which didn’t disappoint me, I got to know actresses I didn’t know anything of, as Gianna Jun and Cha Si-Ah, who had amazing performances and left me excited to see another of their works.

The storytelling was engaging, connecting the past and the present between dreams, and the plot complex and interesting, with a new theme and, yeah, a part or so felt dragging because there is too much drama but in overall, it’s very well organized and is unique as it develops.

The characters are also compelling and curious, as we discover their backgrounds, and how the mermaid is presented, It was intriguing and versatile, becoming more than a “fishwoman” that seduces the sailormen through their voice and pulls them to the sea, so deep in to eat his flesh or something.

The cast was a surprise, I didn’t know them, except Lee Min-ho, and from their performance, I would love to watch from them again, especially Gianna Jun. The soundtrack matches the drama and the sceneries were beautiful and diversified, having the sea as one of the “protagonists”.

Overall, “The Legend of the Blue Sea” is a drama I would recommend to fans of several genres: romance; drama, comedy, fantasy and “mystery”; with a funny love triangle, mermaids and their fantastic powers and nature, a emotional plot, so overwhelming characters, with particular sceneries outside Seoul.

Subject: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Dear Otakus,

The first anime recommendation that comes into my head for anyone new to the anime world is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, besides Death Note, Naruto and other mainstream animes we know so well.

I am currently watching it, in episode 46, and from the very beginning, we already know it was meant to be an overwhelming anime. From the grand opening to the plot development and as it goes.

This post is nothing more than a catch up of all that this anime’s greatness and boldness.

⚠⚠ Beware of violence, aggressive visuals and profanity ⚠⚠

About it

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, or in Japanese “Hagane no Renkinjutsushi”, is finished airing between 2009 and 2010, with 64 episodes, each 24 minutes long, takes the first spot in Myanimelist, as the anime with the best rating, 9.24. It’s based on the manga “Fullmetal Alchemist”(2001-2010), created by Hiromu Arakawa, with 27 volumes and a rating of 9.13, ranked 3rd place in the best manga in Myanimelist.

What’s so good about it?

Being so highly rated, “Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood” has a unique plot and complex storytelling that hooks the watcher instantly to the screen.

The anime begins to introduce the two boys, their loving mother, to destroy that reality to a nightmare, after her death. They start studying alchemy to achieve their objective: revive their mother, breaking one of the forbidden laws of Alchemy.

The plan goes terribly wrong ending Alphonse’s life and taking away Edward’s left leg. Edward sacrifices his right arm to not lose his brother entirely, attaching him to an empty armour’s suit. Broken, Edward accepts to become a State Alchemist along with his brother, striving to get their bodies back, and if the anime wasn’t “messed up” already, it got much better after joining the Central’s State Alchemists Force.

The characters are my favourite part, thanks for the amazing voice actresses and actors behind their life. Edward Elric is the older brother and feeling guilty and responsible over what happened, he aspires for his brother’s body so much as his own. At times, he is childish, like the kid he is, denying to drink milk and rage when someone calls him small or ignore him. But mature when he needs to, when it comes to his friends and brother’s wellbeing.

Alphonse is his younger brother, caged in an armour’s suit, he feels nostalgic and misses his body and sensations, since he doesn’t feel sleep, pain nor hunger. Since a child, he was always more understanding and calm, compared to his brother, and until now, he has never lost a fight against him. Edward and Alphonse share a very deep bond, of love and brothership, making it extra hard to not love them both while they play part of new and dangerous adventures, or worry when both are separate from each other.

The supporting cast is as interesting to meet and follow as the episodes go. As the experience goes, it’s impossible to not emotionally attach to them and avoid to suffer when they are in pain. It’s definitely unique and struggling to accept, placing the characters’ mindset in question.

Each character owning their own ideas and personal thoughts, with more individually, build around an unexpectable plot, that is so irregular and changeable at any second. To think and announce that character as an enemy and then save them from death, to twist around and question them making them allies, compose a dynamic and evolutive plot, believing that everyone can change from that label for the right motives.

On the other hand, your most trusting friends can be planning your death as well. To mischief, tricks, and lies, strategies to overcome the greater enemy.

⚠⚠Spoilers The greater enemy is homunculus, humans artificially created by the philosopher’s stone, known as well as the seven deadly sins: Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Greed, Wrath, Pride and Sloth; and their father, who created the Amestris’ State to destroy in the “Promised Day”. These characters as well as interesting to meet since each has an association with a sin, we start learning about them and their desires, as well as how they are created.

I am a big fan of Greed, who took over one of the supporting cast body, Lin, and now fights against himself in order to become the king of the world- a complete blasphemy- with “the help” of Edward and crew, that sucked up to his will, because he is Greed. Spoilers End⚠⚠

The romance, which is not on the anime’s spotlight but I always like to mention, is slow-paced and comedic. I love Edward and Wendy’s relationship as it is, close but not too close, building suspense and foundation to their emotions. They fight a lot, either because she calls him small or because he destroys her automails, but they care for each other like family.

Winry/ Wendy and Edward talking

⚠⚠Spoilers I remember Edward protecting her from Scar, State alchemist’s Serial Killer, physically and psychological to not “stain her hands”. As well as Wendy. Taking care of Edward’ automail, she is responsible for the success of his missions and for his protection. Learning more about automail, she strives to give her best to Edward. In their own way, they were working their best to save the ones they loved. End Spoilers⚠⚠

The comedy is always present, being part of the character. It breaks out a smile or two because of the voice acting and the following animation, either are the character arguing or just talking. They become chibis or simply plum with a tear, a laugh, and a wobbling animation to it, always pausing from the plot’s stressful moments. Sometimes it’s present in more grave moments and action sequels.

Putting an interruption to what makes you laugh, the plot takes itself seriously with a lot questionable and offensive violence, causing to permanently hate some characters more than the actual villains. ⚠⚠Spoilers, For example, episode 4, when a father made a talking quimera, experimenting on his daughter and dog. Definitely one of the most shocking and disturbing moments that I had seen in anime. End Spoilers⚠⚠

Another thing I love about “Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood” is alchemy. Even though I don’t understand the dynamics sometimes but one thing is essential:

“In order for something to be obtained, something of equal value must be lost.”

It’s not magic, it’s more powerful and scientific, complex than the eye meets, and each character was different alchemy, to create and destroy, with something of the same value. It produces fighting scenes with more interest and strategically more versatile.

In order to use alchemy, it needs an equal value and a transmutation circle to be executed. Unlike most alchemists, Edwards doesn’t need to make a transmutation circle because he has understood the truth, due to the human transmutation of his mother, and has the upper hand against his attackers. Once again turning the combat more interesting and captivating. Alchemy is unique and complex and the plot follows the rules strictly becoming itself more consistent, with consequences of its usage.

Putting aside the Plot and Characters, the anime is also known for its characteristic opening theme. I think everyone knows the song very well. The other openings didn’t have the same popularity reach nevertheless they are not bad.

The soundtrack is also amazing and very well placed onto the moments and really trigger those feelings. The plot is already so distracting and the soundtrack highlights the moment and emotion, either its sadness, happiness, or anger. Truly putting a piece of art together, that is “Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood”.

What could’ve been better?

“Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood” started airing in 2009 and finished in 2010, and from it has the custom animation less detailed and advanced today’s generation of fans are used to. Even so, it’s not considered old enough to be outdated. It’s definitely enough as it is, we clearly understand what’s happening and there is detail to some extent in the characters’ bodies and facial expressions.

Besides that, I was reading some reviews at MAL and in comparison to the previous adaptation, “Fullmetal Alchemist”, some viewers were bothered by the pacing of “Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood”, defining it as fast. I never watched the first adaptation so I can’t confirm but I trust my fellow source to tell the truth and only the truth. To me, the pacing was good, because even if their screen time was small the plot was organized so well to fit all the right moments in.

Time is precious and if you are new to anime and old of age “Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood” is a must-watch. You want disgusting creatures, you have it, smart and tactical fights, too many to count, characters so amazing you want to hug in real life, you’ll cry so much because you can’t, a plot so wide and epic you can’t keep up and a soundtrack it makes you wish for more? It’s “Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood”.

Maybe I am overreacting or not.

I hope you enjoy it for yourself,

Faith
